Best Baking Classes Outside London: Where to Learn Across the UK

From Devon's countryside cookery schools to Manchester's social baking experiences, our picks for the best baking classes across the UK - organised by what you're looking for.

By Steven Foers · ·

London gets most of the attention when it comes to baking classes, but some of the strongest schools in the country are well outside the M25. After researching over 300 UK baking schools, we've found that the best non-London options often have advantages the capital can't match - more space, smaller groups, lower prices, and instructors who aren't rushing between back-to-back sessions.

If you've already read our London guide, think of this as its counterpart. Same editorial standards, different postcode.

What follows isn't a region-by-region directory. We've organised it around the decisions you're actually making: what you want to learn, what kind of experience you're after, and who you're going with. Every school mentioned here is one we'd recommend with confidence, based on what we know about their classes, their track record, and what people consistently say about them.

If You Want Serious Skills

Some schools outside London are genuinely excellent for learning technique. Two in Devon stand out above the rest.

Devon Cookery School in Cullompton holds a 5.0 rating* with 283 reviews* and runs one of the widest ranges of classes we've found anywhere in the UK. Their baking courses cover everything from bread making to pastry, with prices starting from £50*. What makes them worth the trip is that the instructors teach transferable technique, not just how to follow a recipe. You leave understanding why things work, which means you can actually repeat what you've learned at home.

Fifteen miles down the road, Ashburton Cookery School in Ashburton matches that 5.0 rating with 309 reviews and takes a more focused approach to baking. Their patisserie, chocolate making, and macarons classes are particularly strong, with courses from £110. If you're drawn to the precision side of baking, Ashburton is one of the best places in the country for it.

For sourdough specifically, The Sourdough School and South Downs Sourdough both feature in our sourdough guide and remain two of the most respected names in the field.

If French Patisserie Is Your Thing

Gourmandises Academie in Cambridge deserves its own mention. It holds a 5.0 rating with 129 reviews, and the classes are small enough that the instructor adapts to your pace. If you want to learn French patisserie technique in an intimate setting rather than a busy kitchen, this is one of the best options we've found. It's the kind of place where you leave feeling like you've had proper one-to-one attention, even in a group class.

If You're Bringing the Family

Baking classes work brilliantly as family activities, and the schools that do this well design their sessions around mixed ages and abilities rather than just shrinking an adult class. The best ones give children real tasks with real results, which keeps everyone engaged.

Kent Cookery School in Kent is one of the strongest for families and kids baking, with a 4.8 rating and sessions that genuinely engage children rather than just keeping them occupied. Parents and kids work together on the same bakes, which means everyone leaves having made something they're proud of.

The Big Manchester Bake in Manchester and The Big Liverpool Bake in Liverpool both hold 5.0 ratings and take a different approach - more social, more playful, with a Bake Off-style competitive format that kids love. They're better suited to families wanting a fun day out than those looking for in-depth technique. If Birmingham is closer, The Big Birmingham Bake runs the same format.

If You Want a Social Experience

Not everyone books a baking class to become a better baker. Some of the best sessions work because they're a brilliant excuse to spend time with people.

The Big Bake venues across Manchester, Liverpool, and Birmingham have built their entire model around this. The competitive element keeps energy high, and the format works equally well for hen parties, birthdays, or corporate groups. They're consistently rated 5.0 for a reason - they deliver on the experience even if you're not there to perfect your piping.

For something with a celebrity edge, The Kitchen by James Martin in Christchurch draws on Martin's reputation and the production values match. It has a 4.6 rating with 375 reviews and offers a polished, well-resourced experience. The classes cover a range of baking and cookery styles, and the kitchen itself is impressive. Classes are popular and book up quickly, so plan ahead if you have a specific date in mind.

If Budget Matters

London baking classes can be expensive. One advantage of looking further afield is that prices stretch further.

Food Sorcery in Manchester's Didsbury has a 4.9 rating with 120 reviews and runs bread, pastry, and chocolate classes from £0 - yes, genuinely free taster sessions alongside their paid courses. It's one of the most accessible entry points we've found anywhere in the UK.

Harts Barn Cookery School in Longhope offers classes from £25 with a 4.8 rating, making it one of the most affordable options in the Gloucestershire area. Devon Cookery School starts from £50, which is remarkable value given the breadth of their programme.

At the other end, The Cheshire Cookery School in Cheshire has a 4.9 rating with 74 reviews and classes from £130 - more of an investment, but the smaller class sizes and quality of instruction justify the price if you're looking for something special.

Hidden Gems Worth the Drive

Some of our favourite finds are in places you wouldn't think to look.

Birch House Bakery in Haywards Heath, East Sussex, holds a 5.0 rating and offers the kind of intimate, personal instruction that larger schools can't replicate. If you prefer learning in a calm, unhurried setting, it's worth seeking out.

In Norfolk, both REEF Make & Do in Walsingham and Satiate Artisan in King's Lynn hold 5.0 ratings. Norfolk isn't the first county most people think of for baking classes, which is precisely why these schools still have availability when busier areas are booked out.

Peppina Sicilian Bakery in Dorset brings something different to the mix, with a 4.7 rating and 187 reviews. If you've ever wanted to learn pizza and focaccia or Sicilian-style baking, it's one of the few specialists outside London.

Knead & Desire Bakehouse in Hitchin specialises in sourdough and bread making with classes from £175 and a 4.8 rating. It's a more specialist option, but if bread is your focus, it's one of the best dedicated bread schools outside London.

We've covered the standouts, but there are strong schools across the country. Browse by what you want to learn - bread making, cake decorating, patisserie, sourdough, or croissants and viennoiserie - or explore by area if you'd rather stay local.
